Ice box Canyon is located in Red Rock Canyon, a BLM managed park near Las Vegas. It is actually very close to where our daughter lives, so we took a few hikes there while we were visiting.
There is a 13 mile scenic drive that meanders around with many trail head parking spots and scenic overlooks.
Our group leader may be a little short, but she can really hike. She started out on a leash, as required, but she needed more lead to jump successfully up and down the many rocks, so we soon released her.
Looking back at the red Calico Hills from where the park gets its name.
The walls of the canyon quickly narrow and often you are just scrambling in the boulders of the creek. We saw a few groups of mountain climbers along the canyon walls.
Some of the boulders were quite big to climb up and there were areas that we had to duck through brush.
There were flowering bushes along the way, mostly red bud.
This is the head of the canyon and the end of our trail. There was only a trickle on this April day, but it was a pleasant place for a picnic before we headed back the 1 plus miles to our car.
